Smithfield Foods, Inc. joined forces with Smith’s Food & Drug Stores to donate more than 35,000 pounds of protein this past week. This contribution was part of the Smithfield’s 2018 Helping Hungry Homes donation tour, which is now in it’s 10th year. This program is the company’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. This donation, which is equivalent to more than 143,000 servings of protein, will go a long way in helping the 392,000 Utahns facing hunger. It’s made even more impactful when you consider how rarely highly nutritious and protein-rich perishable foods are donated, yet how desperately they are needed to fill nutrition gaps for people who are food insecure.
This is the second such year for this donation, and we had a great time unloading some beautiful hams from the C.R. England truck they arrived on. In fact, C.R. England drivers are responsible for ensuring these donations make it safely to their destinations at food banks across the country. Utah Food Bank board members and staff were joined by Smith’s Food & Drug Stores representatives, along with key staff members from Smithfield Foods, in forming a line to help unload these products. Thanks again to everyone involved in making this special donation happen!
